The University of Patras’ Library & Information Services (LIS) organizes and invites all interested to participate in the Open Workshop on Information Literacy.

The Open Workshop on Information Literacy - http://openworkshop.pbworks.com is an innovative blended learning course combining attendance-based learning with synchronous and asynchronous e-learning.

More specific, the workshop consists of

• weekly 1-hour sessions in the 3d Virtual Immersive Environment of Second Life and
• collaborative work in the course’s wiki

The term “workshop” reflects the emphasis on action-based learning, thus the construction of new knowledge and competences through collaborative and individual activities.

The Open Workshop on Information Literacy is designed to address the needs of graduate and PhD students of the University of Patras.
The general learning objectives of the Open Workshop on Information Literacy include:

• the understanding of the dimensions and the importance of Information Literacy) for academic and professional career,
• the competence to seek, modify, organize, assess and synthesize effectively useful information for learning and research, and
• the mastery of effective life-long learning skills

Yesterday was the special premiere of University of Washington’s Certificate Program in Virtual Worlds, 2012 Class.

At the magnificent UW Avalumni Island, old and new friends, participants from all over the world with various cultures, disciplines and experience in virtual worlds started discovering and experiencing the potential of Second Life.

Mentor Team, Sicily Zapatero and Stylianos Ling, facilitated as newcomers to SL overcame technical difficulties and mastered in record time the basic ’survival’ skills in a virtual immersive environment; movement, written and oral communication, interaction with other avatars and the environment. Then, under the guidance of instructor Randy Heinrichs, CEO of 2b3d, participants

• earned money(!) in a knowledge game;
• discovered key objects from the history of Virtual Worlds in a treasure hunt; and
• competed to earn a spot in the Class showcase wall.

The discussion until the next class meeting continues in the class wiki.

Mentor Team Office Hours for questions and special requests are:

• Monday 9am SLT | 6pm CET and
• Wednesday 4pm SLT.

The course’s tag is #UWVW so keep an eye on news, material and events in social networks in the coming future. A new 3d learning saga has just began!

Education thought leader, author of provoking books and top educational simulation designer Clark Aldrich delivered a sensational speech at the 2011 Class graduation ceremony of the University of Washington’s Virtual Worlds Certificate program.

Clark reveals the potential by defining challenges for pioneers in Immersive Learning Environments (Virtual Worlds). Watch the speech on youtube or vimeo. Clark among other things runs the extremely interesting blog Unschooling Rules, a must-read for all educators.

By the way, Virtual Worlds classes in the University of Washington are about to start for the new academic year. The program is open and offered completely online, in Second Life and other virtual worlds platforms. If you’re interested in discovering and unleashing the potential of virtual worlds for education and business, act now.

On June 9th, Thursday 6 pm PST/SLT, we will have our in-world Graduation celebrating the University of Washington’s Certificate in Virtual Worlds graduation, Class of 2011.

At 6:00 pm (PDT/SLT), the ceremony begins on UW Avalumni Island (http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/UW%20Avalumni/55/61/27) with

• an introduction by Ran Hinrichs, followed by
• our distinguished guest speaker Clark Aldrich, and ending with
• our very own class speaker, Stylianos Mystakidis.

The graduation will commence after our last speaker.  We will then walk down our walkway past our graduates pictures and take pictures. And then, we welcome you to our Spring Show.  Teleport over at the end of our walkway.

Our Spring Show begins at 7:30 on the Virtual Biodome, University of Washington island (http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/University%20of%20Washington/114/139/27).  This is not your ordinary classroom – this is an immersive, engaging virtual world which has served as our learning environment for an entire year.  Our Spring Show is dedicated to the Mayan Civilization.  We are delighted to present

• Mayan Medicine Village,
• Mayan Science (Agriculture, Fishing and Astronomy),
• Mayan Mythology in which you can take part in a Triathlon

and the beautiful environment and attention to detail by all of our students.  The welcoming landing sites orients you to the show and the entire islands resonates with the level of skills in virtual worlds, design, development and learning that the students have accomplished over the year.

We look forward to your visit.  Show ends at 9:00 pm.

If you having been following my twitter feed which is transmitted also over facebook, friendfeed and linkedin, then you know that in the last months I’m deeply involved with virtual worlds and games for education, Second Life and Opensimulator in particular. I am convinced that 3D virtual immersive environments have the potential to revolutionize e-learning and education in general. I have tons on it later!

One of the major obstacles to mass adoption of 3d virtual immersive environments from educators is the relatively high associated development & hosting costs. Wouldn’t it be nice if
a) you could set up your own 3d virtual space within minutes and
b) use it without a high flat monthly fee and pay according to usage?

That’s the concept of a new service run in the cloud called Kitely. I tried it today and the performance was quite good.

Kitely reminded me the days of Google Lively only this time we have full islands and the power of the opensource virtual worlds platform Opensim & the programming language LSL including among others the ability to import oar & iar files -that is finished developed structures, even a complete island (oar) and inventory files (iar).

Within 5 minutes I was able to setup Open Virtual Campus, a sim which is open to all daring innovators to explore and play. After placing an open invitation via twitter, James O’Reilly (@collaborative) and Sicily Zapatero joined shortly after. I put a new outfit in Greek flag colours together in seconds, rezzed & edited several buildings, objects and textures.

Kitely is still in beta and I believe it has potential especially once it supports voice.

The first day wasn’t without incidents though. A house I placed in the sky turned into phantom! When I returned it to physical condition, it became too heavy for the sim to hold and began falling and finally sank into the ground!

Short instructions

• You need a Facebook account to login – to sign-up required.
• You need to download and install a tiny plugin for your browser.
• The sim opens automatically (without manual login) in your default viewer. (Hint: logout from SL first!)

Early beta testers get credits to create and test their own virtual world for free, so why not try it for free?

This semester, after the kind proposal of Professor Marcelo Maina, I have the pleasure to expand my cooperation with the Open University of Catalonia (UOC).

Since last week, I am facilitating the online course CDT4: Designing Resources and Activities for E-Learning Purposes. CDT4 is one of the four courses of the world wide available accredited postgraduate program European Certificate on E-learning Course Design and Teaching. The course’s hashtag is #cdt42010.

In the spring semester I had a great time running the CDT3: Designing Programmes and Courses in Blended Environments in UOC, a video preview of which is also available here and here.
