If you having been following my twitter feed which is transmitted also over facebook, friendfeed and linkedin, then you know that in the last months I’m deeply involved with virtual worlds and games for education, Second Life and Opensimulator in particular. I am convinced that 3D virtual immersive environments have the potential to revolutionize e-learning and education in general. I have tons on it later!

One of the major obstacles to mass adoption of 3d virtual immersive environments from educators is the relatively high associated development & hosting costs. Wouldn’t it be nice if
a) you could set up your own 3d virtual space within minutes and
b) use it without a high flat monthly fee and pay according to usage?

That’s the concept of a new service run in the cloud called Kitely. I tried it today and the performance was quite good.

Kitely reminded me the days of Google Lively only this time we have full islands and the power of the opensource virtual worlds platform Opensim & the programming language LSL including among others the ability to import oar & iar files -that is finished developed structures, even a complete island (oar) and inventory files (iar).

Within 5 minutes I was able to setup Open Virtual Campus, a sim which is open to all daring innovators to explore and play. After placing an open invitation via twitter, James O’Reilly (@collaborative) and Sicily Zapatero joined shortly after. I put a new outfit in Greek flag colours together in seconds, rezzed & edited several buildings, objects and textures.

Kitely is still in beta and I believe it has potential especially once it supports voice.

The first day wasn’t without incidents though. A house I placed in the sky turned into phantom! When I returned it to physical condition, it became too heavy for the sim to hold and began falling and finally sank into the ground!

Short instructions

• You need a Facebook account to login – to sign-up required.
• You need to download and install a tiny plugin for your browser.
• The sim opens automatically (without manual login) in your default viewer. (Hint: logout from SL first!)

Early beta testers get credits to create and test their own virtual world for free, so why not try it for free?

Ομιλία του Καθηγητή του Πανεπιστημίου Πατρών Γ. Μητακίδη στη Διακίδειο Σχολή Λαού (Πάτρα, 19/5/2010) στην οποία παρουσιάζει μελλοντικές εξελίξεις και προκλήσεις για τον ρόλο του Διαδικτύου στη ζωή μας.

Βρήκα πολύ ενδιαφέρον το μοντέλο της e-Πριήνης (ξεκινά στο χρονικό σημείο 8:08): οι βασικές συλλογικές ανθρώπινες δραστηριότητες παραμένουν απαράλλακτες στον χρόνο με τη διαφορά ότι σήμερα σε μεγάλο βαθμό μπορούν να διεξαχθούν διαδικτυακά.

Η ομιλία επεκτείνεται στον Σημασιολογικό Ιστό (Semantic Web), την σχέση του Διαδικτύου με την Μαθηματική επιστήμη, καθώς και την εξέταση του Παγκόσμιου Ιστού από την σκοπιά της θεωρίας των Δικτύων (network theory).

Καλό βίντεο απευθυνόμενο κυρίως προς εφήβους για αποφυγή δημοσίευσης περιττών ιδιωτικών λεπτομερειών & πολυμεσικού υλικού στα κοινωνικά δίκτυα…

Βέβαια, όπως είδαμε τους τελευταίους μήνες και οι ενήλικοι στην Ελλάδα και το εξωτερικό έχουν ανάγκη να αποφεύγουν τις παγίδες των κοινωνικών δικτύων…

The installation was completed on the custom domain, vergis.edu.gr

At that point, the DNS settings of the Google Apps were done via a paid host.

However, ever since IEK Vergi invested and expanded its IT infrastructure by developing synchronous and asynchronous e-learning platforms and decided to move all its websites and ICT services to private, dedicated webservers.

As one the last steps was moving Google Apps to a new DNS provider. I couldn’t find anything similar to the internet, so I post the information here.

The process was done fearly easy in two steps.

First, the dns settings in the new provider were prepared. More specific, I replicated the related DNS records for Google Apps. These were 7 MX records for Gmail starting with

host: vergis.edu.gr
type: MX
record value: ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM.
MX value: 1

and 7 CNAME records for all major Google Apps services i.e.:

host: calendar.vergis.edu.gr
type: CNAME
value: ghs.google.com.

Second, the nameservers of the domain were change to point to the new DNS provider.

After a few hours, all services were running smoothly via the new DNS provider.

Does anyone know why Google doesn’t offer Google Video in Greece?
