The University of Patras’ Library & Information Services (LIS) organizes and invites all interested to participate in the Open Workshop on Information Literacy.

The Open Workshop on Information Literacy - http://openworkshop.pbworks.com is an innovative blended learning course combining attendance-based learning with synchronous and asynchronous e-learning.

More specific, the workshop consists of

• weekly 1-hour sessions in the 3d Virtual Immersive Environment of Second Life and
• collaborative work in the course’s wiki

The term “workshop” reflects the emphasis on action-based learning, thus the construction of new knowledge and competences through collaborative and individual activities.

The Open Workshop on Information Literacy is designed to address the needs of graduate and PhD students of the University of Patras.
The general learning objectives of the Open Workshop on Information Literacy include:

• the understanding of the dimensions and the importance of Information Literacy) for academic and professional career,
• the competence to seek, modify, organize, assess and synthesize effectively useful information for learning and research, and
• the mastery of effective life-long learning skills

This semester, after the kind proposal of Professor Marcelo Maina, I have the pleasure to expand my cooperation with the Open University of Catalonia (UOC).

Since last week, I am facilitating the online course CDT4: Designing Resources and Activities for E-Learning Purposes. CDT4 is one of the four courses of the world wide available accredited postgraduate program European Certificate on E-learning Course Design and Teaching. The course’s hashtag is #cdt42010.

In the spring semester I had a great time running the CDT3: Designing Programmes and Courses in Blended Environments in UOC, a video preview of which is also available here and here.

Finally, if you are interested to see how we incorporate web 2.0 collaborative tools into the institution’s instructional strategy, check out the following presentation I prepared for the session on Learning 2.0 of the Athens e-learning expo 2010.

Plot: Miska is an extraordinary freshman in the University of Patras. But as soon as he arrives, he realizes there is a surprise for him!

The making of

I chose one fully unknown development tool to me at the time, Thinking Worlds, which posed a serious learning challenge.

I downloaded and installed Thinking Worlds’ trial version. I watched the initial training video. The scenario idea just struck me in the initial experimentation phases. The game is a fun introduction into the ICT services of Upatras by UPNet Network Operation Center. The application itself is well structured and stable. Things become a bit tricky in the scene flow management when you want to add more complex interactions and controls.

As I went along, I found solutions by watching portions of other videos & searching their forum. I used ReD’s games as a model. As I continued, I discovered more features such as the embedded video & website visit that I incorporated for experimentation and demonstration.

However, at the end, I discovered that some features work only if the game is exported as standalone application and not as a webpage.

On the next day I had the initial version of the game ready. In the following days, I made some improvements e.g. giving a 2nd choice for viewing the video.

Summing up, the risk to enter the ‘uncharted territories’ of Thinking Worlds paid off fully. Developing the game was fun and rewarding. I have showed this demo to some people and they like it. I am looking forward to taking this to the next level!

Κατ’ εμέ ο βασικός στόχος πίσω από την εισαγωγή της τεχνολογίας στην εκπαίδευση είναι η διεύρυνση και η εμβάθυνση της εκπαίδευσης στο χώρο, στο χρόνο και τον τρόπο μάθησης. Παράλληλα από την εμπειρία μου η τεχνολογία όταν χρησιμοποιηθεί κατάλληλα μπορεί να αναβαθμίσει την εκπαίδευση μέσα στην τάξη.

Γι’ αυτό τον λόγο εγκαινιάζουμε μια ειδική σειρά καταχωρήσεων με ιδέες και πρακτικές για δημιουργική αξιοποίηση της εκπαιδευτικής τεχνολογίας κατά τη διάρκεια της διδασκαλίας.

Ξεκινάμε σήμερα με τη διδασκαλία ιστορίας στην έκτη τάξη στο δημοτικό σχολείο Radstock όπου μια πλατφόρμα τηλεκπαίδευσης, ασύρματο δίκτυο και φορητές συσκευές χρησιμοποιούνται για να βγάλουν τους μαθητές έξω από την τάξη και μακριά από την οθόνη του υπολογιστή, στον φυσικο κόσμο. Η τεχνολογία υποστηρίζει τη μάθηση ως μέσο επικοινωνίας μεταξύ δασκάλου και μαθητών οι οποίοι διασκεδάσουν αυτενεργώντας και δημιουργώντας, μαθαίνοντας ουσιαστικά και ερευνώντας συνεργατικά με δραστηριότητες όπως κυνήγι θησαυρού και δημιουργία βίντεο.

Ο ρόλος του δασκάλου είναι να προετοιμάσει και να εκτελέσει αποτελεσματικά το σενάριο, να επιβλέπει τις ομάδες μαθητών, να συντονίζει και να τροφοδοτεί τη διαδικασία, καθώς και να καθοδηγήσει την αξιολόγηση.

Η επισφράγιση της επιτυχίας της εκπαίδευσης: οι μαθητές συνεχίζουν να μαθαίνουν εθελοντικά και εξ’ αποστάσεως επικοινωνόντας και αλληλεπιδρώντας μεταξύ τους και με το εκπαιδευτικό υλικό και μετά το σχολείο.

I am participating in the Learning in 3D Reading Group initiated by @HansdeZwart. Despite time scarcity, it has been a great experience so far that enhanced greatly the value of the thought & action provoking book «Learning in 3D» by @kkapp and @Wadatripp compared to plain solo reading. Hopefully I will find time to write more about it in the future. This blended collaborative e-learning approach of an inpromptu e-book club combining meaningfully tools such as blogs, twitter, delicious, webmeetings is itself an excellent learning practice for our functions as trainers and learners.

As part of our blended studying program we post in shifts a summary of one chapter each week. This week is my turn so I thought to change the rules to take it to the next level. Instead of writing a plain summary let’s play! Enjoy!

First Challenge of the 3d Learning Magician

So you want to design & create learning in 3d virtual worlds? Let’s see if you know your craft and what you can actually do!

1) Go and play the 3d game for new university students: Miska at the University

2) Analyze and review the game in the embedded form or here. If you find youself in trouble, remember the tricks (keep reading)!

Tricks you’ll need to know

So far we have seen

• the forces and the 4-I characteristics of the 3d Internet or «Immernet»: Immersive (3DLE), Interactive (3D social networking), Immediate (Networked Virtual Spaces), Intuitive (Dynamic Knowledge Discovery),
• the need for a radical transformation of learning function and agents in all domains, and
• the characteristics ’sensibilities’ of learning experiences in 3d virtual environments.

Here are the axioms of a design architecture (methodology) of sound learning experiences in 3d virtual words (3DLEs).

The architecture itself is 3-dimensional and consists of four design layers. According to the proposed logic, all layers should be aligned. The alignment here is illustrated with four colours corresponding to the four macrostructures.

1st layer: Design Principles
Characteristics of a (good) context-based learning experience where participants learn actively while performing tasks.

Instructionally Grounded (Business needs? Why 3d?)
Participant Centered (Role, Interactions)

Big news: This semester, after Professor’s Albert Sangra kind invitation, I will have the priviledge of cooperating with the Open University of Catalonia (Universitat Oberta de Catalonia – UOC).

Albert Sangra is an international e-learning expert. I enjoyed especially reading the extensive summary in english of his PhD «The Integration of Information and Communication Technologies in the University: Models, Problems and Challenges» which is available here (pdf) at Tony Bates’ blog. In the thesis Sangra describes his research results and insights into the transformation of European universities through the adoption of ICT & e-learning.

UOC is a fully online international open university based in Barcelona, Spain. It offers over 1.270 flexible distance learning degrees and courses in various subjects and languages. Among them, UOC organizes the accredited (20 ECTS) postgraduate distance learning course on instructional design and e-learning, the European Certificate on E-learning Course Design and Teaching which leads to European Master in e-learning. Students participate in 4 online courses for around 8 months. Full details about the European Master on e-learning are available here.

More specific, I will be facilitating the course CDT3: Designing Programmes and Courses in Blended Environments with the guidance of another fine instructional designer, Professor Marcelo Fabian Maina Patras.

CDT3 takes place mainly within UOC’s virtual campus. The hashtag for sharing resources (e.g. delicious), following & participating in our open activities is #cdt32010.
