Learning is hard fun

Since the birth of my 3rd daughter in late 2009 time became even more scarce, so I focused my open learning mainly on

  • sharing bookmarks on delicious,
  • discussing on twitter, and
  • posting interesting multimedia resources -such as videos- with short comments on my posterous microblog,
  • all together aggregated via friendfeed.

The Alive Learning blog became a space for longer reflections in Greek and English.

Today, I ‘d like to make an exception and post here a video that demonstrates metaphorically the approach of learning as hard fun. (Good) learning has two dimensions;

  1. it should be challenging, demanding, cognitively stretching in context with respective real-world situations.
  2. At the same time learning should be an enjoyable, meaningful experience (remember Kirkpatrick).

As human beings we have a tendency to focus on ease and avoid pain. So can we motivate learners to embrace willingly hardship?

The following video tackles a question in a relevant situation: how can you convince people to take the stairs instead of an elevator in the subway? Here is a great idea; adding good fun to the extra walking strain – and it works! Check it out here.

What are your stairs and elevator? How can you add fun to the harder task of taking the stairs?
