A recent INSEAD study showed that physical mobility and immersion with foreign languages and cultures have a positive effect on a person’s creativity and entrepreneurial spirit.
As a former European board member of AEGEE-Europe in the ’90s, an international NGO who proposed the launch and supported actively Erasmus, Socrates and all European students mobility programs, I can personally verify the findings of the study by Associate Professor William Maddux.
Having being an active member of NGOs for 6 years, I lived in Brussels, Belgium and Duesseldorf, Germany, travelled in most European countries and cooperated closely with 100s of people in various projects. I consider this enjoyable experience to be an equivalent of a Master degree focusing in a practical way on European politics, leadership, international cooperation, marketing, lobbying, non-profit business management.
Actually I’ll go one step further and claim that also cooperating in multinational teams but more importantly in groups of people with different expertise area, knowledge background and interdisciplinary mindset (a unique feature of AEGEE) can be equally beneficial both for creativity and working skills as well as personal identity forming.
This is one precious aspect of the non-formal learning that young people can gain by having a great time as active members in international NGOs.
Thanks to Wesley Fryer for locating the interesting video.
