Addressing an open call by Mrs. Jane Heart at the Centre for Learning & Performance Technologies, here are some notable learning & teaching tools in alphabetic order.
- Elluminate – Stable, efficient, feature rich web-conferencing tool for business. I’d love to have the interface in my local language though.
- Del.icio.us – Information fishing stick (or rather net?) in the internet ocean. Very efficient and simple social bookmarking tool with a must-have firefox plug-in.
- Dotsub.com – Very useful tool for a country such as Greece. Adding subtitles to videos makes them understandable to a much broader audience. A must when a video is intended for high school students for example. Also useful for foreign language learning students.
- Google Reader – Effective, free tool for rss feeds, easy for non-expert users. My personalised news kiosk.
- Moodle – One of the best overall platforms for asynchronous e-learning. Free, open-source with great add-ons developed in a global community. Backbone of most of my e-learning projects.
- Skype – Serious phone alternative + IM tool + collaboration add-ons = efficiency
- Slideshare – The idea of sharing in life is not just superb, it is a pointer to the solution of many problems in all levels. Identifying the existential importance of our relations within societies helps us overcome individualism and develop our humanity. Slideshare as a tool is a perfect example of technology-driven enabler in global scale. Moreover, slideshare is a source of great material, thanks to their open-minded contributors. I’ve spent hours discovering fascinating presentations in various subjects.
- Wikispaces - Available power of wiki-freedom. Use it wisely!
- Wordpress - One of the best free, open-source blog platform choices.
- YouTube Catcher – Invaluable tool for keeping off-line copies of videos. Particulary useful in teaching instances where internet connection is unavailable or problematic.
